We will provide instructions about watering and covering when we drop off Le Petit Planter insert at your home. It does not matter the season, planters need to be regularly checked and watered as needed. The best way to do this is to stick a finger two inches into the soil.  If the soil is dry, then water. The smaller plants around the edge/perimeter of the container tend to dry out first.

Winter planters are created with Kansas City’s cold weather in mind. Spring and Fall inserts can be damaged by a frost if not covered when temperatures dip below 40 degrees at night. We recommend Spring and Fall drop-ins be covered overnight with a light sheet, breathable fabric, or landscape fabric when temps are expected to drop below 40 degrees. Do NOT cover with plastic.   You will be provided with care instructions for your inserts. Care instructions

Here are your recommendations for you to keep your winter greens happy and flourishing all season long.

Water: Regular and thorough watering is the key to your success. Make sure the water gets to all the plants in the pot, from the edges to the center. Even when we receive rain, please check your containers to see that they received proper hydration.

Rainwater is usually never enough to make a difference. Wind dries out the planters; if it is particularly windy, please water more frequently. Morning water is ideal, but watering in general is key. Plants in the shade do not dry out as quickly and require less watering.

The frequency of watering depends on daily temperatures:

  • 80º and above – water daily
  • 70º – water every other day
  • 60º – water every third day
  • 50º – every week
  • 33º - 40º  – every 10 days
  • 32º or below – no water needed
  • Frost – Be prepared to either bring your insert inside or cover with a breathable fabric. (Please note that it is not necessary to cover winter greens.)

For Winter Inserts: We recommend spritzing the greens with water every week. We applied Wilt Pruf which is an anti-desiccant and helps to keep moisture in the needles in any weather. We recommend reapplying Wilt Pruf (found on Amazon or a local nursery every few weeks.)
